WIth the expansion of low-cost airlines it is now possible to fly to Crete from all over Europe cheaper and easier than ever before. The nearest airport to Gavalohori is Chania (Souda - CHQ) which is about 45 minutes drive away and receives charter flights from the UK, mostly on Tuesday, in the summer season and on other days with RyanAir.
Iraklion (or "Heraklion" - HER) airport is less than 2 hours drive away, and gets UK charters on a variety of days in season. Both also serve other European routes.
Either of these airports can also be reached every week of the year by travelling via Athens (ATH) - which is neither as expensive nor as awkward as you might think.
You can travel to Athens via BA, EasyJet or Aegean Airways (direct from Heathrow) or on other carriers using European hubs, and then transfer to Crete using Olympic, Aegean Airways or RyanAir or even overnight on the ferry from Piraeus (outside Athens) to Souda.

Car hire is not essential to staying at the villa, as there is the pool in which to swim, and shops, bars and tavernas within easy walking distance, but there is no doubt that having the freedom that a car will give you will make your holiday more enjoyable.
